María Elena holds a Ph.D. in Engineering from the Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico, and a B.Eng. in Environmental Engineering from the Universidad de los Andes. She has conducted research in Colombia, Mexico, and Germany, (Technological University of Bolivar, Tecnológico de Monterrey, and the FLORES Institute of the United Nations University).
